Recently, (end of October) I visited Tropical Birdland in Leicestershire with my partner. I had no idea what to expect. We had seen signs for a Tropical Bird Garden so I was thinking it would be a garden centre with a few lorries. Before we went I looked on their website and discovered they had over 250 birds! It was interesting to read how Birdland all began with one boy with a love of birds and a private collection that grew and eventually opened to the public. The most interesting thing is that a lot of the birds are free flying! I was now very excited to go and I have to say it far exceeded my expectations and I loved it!

Before, we even got into and paid entry to Birdland we got to see some birds of prey such as Snowy and Great Grey Owls. That was where I took one of my favourite pictures.

Upon entrance to Birdland we purchased some mixed nuts to feed to the birds. Often in places where you can feed the animals its cost a fortune! I was pleasantly surprised at how cheap it was here and the entrance fee was only £7.75 each for an adult! It was definitely good value for money! What was really clever is the food we brought corresponded to a red disc so any enclosures with a red disc on it could be fed. This is an easy way for the public to see that different birds have different diets and couldn't be fed everything, such a clear system!
We got to see so many different birds and like the website said a lot of them were free flying. There were a few walk in aviaries such as the Parakeets! Be warned with this one the birds are VERY friendly so only go in if you like birds all over you like in the pictures below. You may also leave with a new hair do!
As well as birds they also have a few other animals such as Emu and Goats if birds aren't quite your thing. Although, if you are going to somewhere called Birdland this shouldn't really be the case.
My favourite part of Birdland (that wasn't stuffing my face with cake and warming up with a hot chocolate at the Real Macaw Café) was the Parrot path. This lets you get closer to the birds. If your patient enough and the birds like you they will use your arms and hands as a perch. If they like you too much they might not want to leave you! This happened with one of the birds that I wanted to adopt and take home with me! Below is a Sun Concure Parrot that was so cute! He decided to cuddle up into my hood (it was a very cold day) and went to sleep! We had to gently encourage him to leave us (though we didn't want him too).

There were so many birds on the Parrot Path that were so well behaved (although a little naughty). Like any animal birds are curious in their nature and two cheeky Great Green Macaws couldn't get enough of my camera and camera bag straps as well as trying to unzip my coat, I didn't mind though.

We had such a great day out at Tropical Birdland and would highly recommend it! Here are a few more photos from the trip.
