Rutting Season at Petworth Park

Any photographer knowns that rutting season is a great opportunity to get some amazing photos! Rutting is the term used to describe male deer (stags) fighting which involves their antlers locking in a head to head battle. Rutting happens in autumn around the first two weeks of October. Female deer (doe's) are typically only in season for one day so the competition to mate is very high.

One of the best places near me to witness this spectacle is Petworth Park in Horsham. Its a very open space where the deer are easy to spot and where if you are quiet and respectful you can get fairly close to them to get some great photos. I also went last year but was not happy with my photos. This year I am definitely a lot happier but there is always room for improvement and a camera upgrade in the near future! Here are my 10 favourites from Saturday!

The fun of deer photography is trying to get one or two deer alone. These make the most effective photos as group photos don't have the same impact. The long grass also makes it even more difficult to try and get good photos. But it does make for great camouflage!

My dad found my photography spot

Keep an eye on my Facebook page for some great videos of some rutting behaviour!
