Kew Gardens

Those of you that follow my personal Instagram account will know that I recently got to visit Kew Gardens. I was there interviewing for the position of visitor host and got to visit the gardens afterwards. I've held off writing this until I found out the result of that interview which is that until November I get to work at this beautiful location (alongside Pizza Hut) for the busy summer season.

Before applying for the position I had never actually visited Kew but it was on my list of places to visit for my photography. I had no idea what to expect but it well surpassed all expectations. Kew Gardens is big! So make sure you take the map so you don't get lost (this will happen even with the map if your like me). My first stop was the Orangery restaurant after being a bag of nerves for the interview I was definitely hungry! After a pit stop I started to wonder the gardens and discovered just how beautiful the place was.

One of the first places that I stumbled across was the Princess of Wales Conservatory which hosts plants from ten different climate zones. It was only at the "end" of my exploration that I realised there were different zones that you could walk through in a set layout. Rather then doing what I did and just walking in random directions I suggest following this route as it will give you a fuller experience. I still very much enjoyed my haphazard route around the conservatory.

Next I visited the tree top walk which is not for people that do not like heights and is still relatively scary for those that do. Not recommended on a windy day as it does sway slightly. I would also suggest being relatively fit as after all the stairs collapsing in a panting mess at the top isn't the best look. But my is it worth it. The walk as the name suggests lets you walk amongst the trees which is breath-taking. If you look very closely you may just notice some parrots feeding amongst the trees too.

From here I found my way into Palm House which is a big greenhouse for various palms and other subtropical plants. Its what I imagine walking into a rainforest would feel like, its also great for warming up on a cold day. Like the tree top walk you can also climb stairs (a lot less don't worry!) to give you a higher perspective on the vast size of these plants. Here's me enjoying the Palm House.

As well as the Conservatory, Palm House and Tree Top Walkway I easily spent a few hours just walking round the gardens. There is so much to see like the rock gardens which was built to resemble a Pyrenean mountain and hosts a wide range of plants. If like me you don't know that much about plants its easy just to walk round and appreciate the beauty of the plants. Its a great excuse to leave the house and have a scenic day out.

As well as the pictures on this blog I will be posting pictures on my Instagram (animillsphotography) so keep an eye out for lots of pictures of plants that I have no idea what they are called. I'm very excited to start my new job and I'm sure there will be a lot more pictures to come.
